Caroline Brown started working in textiles following a career as a secretary and after raising a family. In 2001, she studied textiles with Jae Maries, Ruth Issett and Amanda Clayton; from 2005-06 she went to Cambridge Regional College as a full-time mature student on an Access art & design course (fine art, textiles and art history). She gained an award with distinction, and her final major pieces in both art and textiles were chosen to be hung at the college for a year afterwards.
Recent exhibitions include a joint show with Jill Leech at the Flitch Art Gallery, Great Dunmow (Jan 2009); and the King of Hearts Gallery, Norwich, where she was given a solo show within an exhibition of East Anglian textiles (May-Aug 2008). Last year, she also exhibited with the Essex Craft Society at Braintree Town Hall in April, and as part of Artists in Action in November, as well as at art fairs in Reach and in Saffron Walden. She is a full member of the Essex Craft Society.
Making art is my way of exploring the world around me – its forms, colours and, in particular, textures – and recording ideas and observations. I draw what I see, often make small samples, and then work out the final piece on the fabric itself, letting one move suggest the next. Since I work almost exclusively by hand, it is a long, slow, thoughtful process.
